Gabion raised beds as the perfect alternative
A gabion raised bed is an alternative with many advantages over conventional wooden models. Especially when it comes to durability and robustness, the wire mesh filled with stones is way ahead. No painting with weatherproof paint is required. This is particularly important, as glazes can, under certain circumstances, be chemically harmful to plants. Gabion raised beds enable particularly environmentally conscious and ecological gardening without any further effort. Another advantage of gabion raised beds is that the stones wonderfully store the warmth of the sun; thus the vegetables in the raised bed ripen earlier and the flowers shine in full splendour earlier in the year.
Gabion raised beds in small and large gardens
Gabions are by no means something new; they were already used for medieval warfare, offering protection from enemies. At that time, they were wicker baskets that were filled with surrounding material. Gabions have become an indispensable part of everyday life. In landscaping, they are used as noise protection along motorways and highways to keep noise away from neighbouring villages. They are also used to prevent soil from sliding down embankments. Gabions have their linguistic origin in Italy - the translation is "large cage".
The use of gabions as raised beds is a particularly modern variant.
The size of the garden is not the decisive factor in deciding whether to choose a Gabiona raised bed. We have the right solution for every local situation: in addition to numerous ready-made sets in many different sizes, we also offer you custom-made raised beds in your desired size at gabiona.de, so that your new raised bed fits perfectly into your garden. Of course, the necessary accessories are already included in every shipment.
You can choose from two mesh sizes - just the way you like it:
5 x 5 centimetres
5 x 10 centimetres
The construction of the planting gabion is very simple. With a little manual skill, the mesh is ready for filling in no time at all. The outer basket of the raised bed is filled with stones, the size and composition of which depend both on the mesh size and on the mood you want to create in your garden. Light-coloured stones convey a Mediterranean warmth, dark stones appear cool and neutral. If you already like gabions, a gabion raised bed is an ideal addition. Fences can also be made to individual dimensions. And with gabion furniture, you can opt for long-lasting seating.
Filling gabion raised beds
It is the choice of the right gabion stone that makes your raised bed something special. The colours and shapes create moods. In addition, they can be integrated into the look of the rest of the garden. For example, if you have covered your beds with light-coloured gravel, light-coloured stones in the gabion raised bed are also a stringent choice. However, you can also use contrasting colours to create highlights so that your gabion raised bed stands out from the rest. You can buy all variations as sample bags at gabiona.de to make sure everything meets your expectations beforehand.

Planting gabion raised beds in a stylish and useful way But it's not just the stones that draw the eye; the unique plantings are also real eye-catchers in the garden: you have almost unlimited possibilities for planting unique fauna there. Whether you choose vegetable plants or conjure up a wonderfully colourful sea of flowers - we have summarised the best raised bed plants for you: Leaf lettuces Kohlrabi Beetroot Radishes Bush beans Bush tomatoes Spring onions Strawberries Herbs Nasturtiums Tagetes Azaleas Pansies Primroses Tulips Snapdragons Gabion raised bed: set up in no time at all Before you can start planting, however, you need to assemble the raised bed. Basically, the wire baskets - regardless of whether you prefer a standard size or a custom size - can be set up with little effort and without additional anchoring. Mark out the installation area. The subsoil should be compacted and free of weeds. If necessary, it is advisable to lay out a weed fleece. Lay out the gabion base and fasten the side rails simply by screwing in the enclosed assembly spirals - without any tools. Now fold the side rails upwards and insert the connecting spirals here too. Now line the interior with the enclosed fleece. This prevents the soil from being washed into the stones later. We recommend attaching the fleece to the top of the grid with cable ties for filling. If necessary, a rodent grid can be placed on the bottom of the raised bed. Insert the supplied spacers in the desired places in the outer and inner basket. In the inner area, the fleece must be provided with small slits for this purpose. Now fill in your gabion stones and the soil in alternating layers. Now you can cultivate the gabion raised bed.
