Planting gabions can be used in many ways in the home and garden. The smaller and plantable alternative to classic gabion raised beds is a robust and timeless plant paradise.
With the planting gabions, garden lovers can really let off steam. Flowers that are in full bloom at different times can be combined and ensure that the planting gabion looks splendid all year round. At the same time, useful insects, which are an absolute must in every garden, cavort in it. These special baskets can also be used as space dividers, patio borders or vegetable beds.
Different types of plant gabions
Whether as a miniature version, a garden divider or a highlight in the green oasis - planting gabions can be constructed in many different ways and there are no limits to your creativity. Larger versions - for example as patio borders - create their own ecosystem, which can be planted from above but also from the sides.
When erected alone, the plant gabion functions like a large flower pot in which large green plants in particular are given an exclusive place. For example, a huge Washington palm can develop to its full potential.
Versatile possibilities for plant gabions:
flat planting gabions
square planting gabions
Rectangular planting gabions
The attractive stone baskets are decorative eye-catchers in large gardens or even in smaller front gardens. Animal inhabitants and a colourful sea of flowers transform the planting gabions into a paradise.
Planting the stone gabions
Vegetable plants, evergreens or a colourful flower arrangement - the planting gabions can be embellished according to your ideas. The fleece supplied lines the baskets and keeps the soil permanently in place. Cut the fleece crosswise at the sides - and you can place the desired plants through the resulting openings. Hanging plants in the gabions also create an attractive picture in your garden.
We have put together a small selection of plants that are suitable for gabions:
coloured ornamental grasses
Irrigation is usually done from above - either by watering or the rain. However, an irrigation system with drip hoses can also be installed in the plant gabions. This way you have a connection to a water supply at all times and your plants receive the care they need. The roots do not have to fear waterlogging, as the water supplied can drain into the ground.
Installation and filling of planting gabions
The wire baskets are manufactured in the desired dimensions - you can choose from standard dimensions at gabiona.de or select your individual size. The wire mesh consists of a 4 millimetre thick wire and a galvanic coating. This protects it against corrosion. The scope of delivery also includes spacers and connecting spirals. If you have chosen planting gabions with a C-ring connection, you will find the appropriate tools in our online shop at gabiona.de.
Depending on the size of the planting gabion, additional support pillars must be installed to ensure stability. At best, one post should be installed after every metre of planting gabion. The wire baskets can be firmly anchored by means of a point foundation. We also offer accessories for the posts in our Gabion Shop.
Once the wire baskets have been set up and connected, they are lined with the enclosed fleece. Fasten it to the top wire with cable ties; this way it will always stay in place when filled with soil. As with the raised bed, choose the planting substrate according to the plants you would like to put in the basket. The fleece is weatherproof and keeps the soil in the wire baskets. The basket can now be planted from above - but this special form of gabion can also be planted from the side if you cut small openings in the fleece and plant the vegetation from the side.
We would be happy to advise you on your options for setting up and embellishing the decorative plant gabions.
